Ohio artist goes national with cards and calendars

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Columbus-An Ohio artist is going national. Michael Owens of Columbus has just signed with 10% Productions

to have his colorful and satirical art appear on greeting cards, calendars and other items to be distributed all over the country.

Owens made his mark in the world of art based on cartooning in the style of luminaries like Roy Lichtenstein-a graduate of Ohio State and Andy

Warhol. Owens' art

openly embraces gay

subject matter and his

cartoons lampoon not only

the world of straight cartooning but

the queer life as well. His technique is refined and beautiful and his subject matter is quirky, quixotic and quintessentially queer.

Owens has exhibited his art in Columbus at various galleries, restaurants and coffee shops and he will now be getting the national attention he deserves. Owens has also done the artwork for this year's and last year's Pride festivals in Columbus. Owens' work is perfect

for Pride with its colorful visuals and his sassy humor filled with messages of being open and true to one's self. This year two paintings titled Biker Bride and Pride Wanted have been donated to Stonewall for a raffle. Tickets can be purchased at this year's Pride parade and will also be featured at several Pride events prior to the parade.

In January of this year, Owens debuted Love, Lust & Lies II: The Saga Continues. This represents a new series of

images in the same vein as his prior series 'Love, Lust & Lies.

Currently Village Lighthouse, the parent company of 10% Productions, is producing seven birthday greeting cards and three magnets. A 2005 calendar will be available in stores nationwide by month's end. Owens just returned from the Chicago Book Expo where he was signing early copies of the calendar.

His latest work, Know Wonder, is currently on display at Union Station Video Café in Columbus all through the month of Pride. This series showcases the Amazing Amazon,

Wonder Woman, in pop art fashion from the 1940s through 2004.

Owens said, "I've always been a Wonder Woman fan and wanted to pay tribute to that inner obsession in bold strokes."

Owens' cards and magnets are currently available at An Open Book in Columbus and at other GLBT stores across the state. His merchandise can also be purchased online at www.villagelighthouse.com. Owens is hoping to have a calendar signing in Columbus in the near future. He is already at work on the 2006 calendar and a new series of card with images of drag queens for the same company.

Fusion wins, Spitfire loses to end football season

by Mika Major

Bedford, Ohio-It was the perfect end to a less than perfect season for the Cleveland Fusion on June 12. Hosting the Wisconsin Riveters, Cleveland dominated the game from the kick-off. The final score of 62-0 resulted in a 3-5 season for the Fusion.

The Riveters, winless and scoreless for the season, obviously need development. They need more and bigger players and they need time. Suiting up barely enough players to field a team, the Riveters never stopped running full out and trying their best against the seasoned Fusion.

The Toledo Spitfire also played this weekend but lost to the Demolition in

Detroit, 93-0. De-

sion with an 8-0

has a season record of 448 yards passing and five touchdowns.

For the defense, the Mutiny has corner back Veronica Milinazzo with three interceptions and Deb Deltoro as linebacker with two blocked punts and two sacks for the season. The Columbus Comets are ready. Cynthia Freeman as tail back, Dietra Sherwin on de-

troit leads the diviCleveland Fusion quarterback Katie Hanks makes an end run against the Riveters' defense with the assistance of running back Martina Latessa.

record. They enter the playoffs seeking a three-peat as national champions.

The National Women's Football Association playoffs begin on June 26. The Columbus Comets, a wild card for the Great Lakes Division, will travel to Massachusetts to face off against the Mutiny.

The Mutiny is 6-2 in their division and will be a real challenge to the Comets. Mutiny players to watch include running back Tara Fay, who ran for 164 yards on 17 carries, scoring two touchdowns on June 12; kicker Kendra Cestone, who was four for four in extra points against the Connecticut Crush, and Karolyn Domini, quarterback. Domini

fense as wide receiver and tight end Erin Taylor highlight the solid foundation of the Comets. They have the heart and the skill. Support the team, Ohio. We have a winner.
